Summer Reading Ideas
What to read next?
Every year the University of California-Berkeley sends out a reading list to its incoming freshmen. None of the books are required reading; all surround a different theme. Here's a link to the 2006 list: Books for Future Presidents. To see the complete list, click here: UC Berkeley Summer Reading Lists.
One place to search for new ideas is by searching award winning books. Here are some of the notable awards:
National Book Awards
Man Booker Prize
Pulitzer Prize
Independent Publisher Book Award
There are many blogs and reading lists for high school students out there. Here are some links to get you started:
My favorite librarian is a woman named Nancy Perl (yes, I have a favorite librarian).
Check out her website here: Nancy Perl's Book Lust
The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) has recommendations for you, too. Check out this link:
American Library Association's Outstanding Books for the College Bound
Amazon.com is also helpful if you type in a book you like and then read through for suggestions. Check out the various links, including this one: Editor's Picks: The Best Books of the Year So Far for Teens from last year, or check out this year's bestsellers here: Amazon Bestsellers for Teens.
